The red horse chestnut tree is a valuable ornamental tree which grows slower and remains smaller than the common Horsechestnut tree. Has a dense canopy which casts a deep shade. Leaves are opposite, composed of 5 leaflets, dark green, shiny and smooth. Yellow-brown autumn colour. Red flowers appear in upright panicles in May from the age of 8 to 10 years onwards. The roots form a densely branched root system with a high percentage of fibrous roots. This species is resistant to urban climate and industrial pollution but does not tolerate heavily compressed subsoil.
